Sir Elton John’s “Candles In the Wind”: Norma Jean and England Rose

Did you know that: Bernie Taupin (co-writer) was inspired to write this song after hearing the phrase "candle in the wind" used in tribute to Janis Joplin?

The first version is a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. The second one was rewritten and played at Princess Diana's funeral and after released as a tribute single to her life becoming the biggest-selling single of all time.

One of the changes Elton John and Bernie Taupin did was in the first line of the song; from "Goodbye Norma Jean, though I never knew you at all" to "Goodbye England's rose, may you ever grow in our hearts."
